Sample project, Kirkland
The covered fire terrace
A deck nobody used after September.

The problem
The family loved the view but the deck was wet, shaded and unused for eight months. They wanted somewhere to sit outside on a cold evening without a patio heater roaring.
What we decided
- Replace the deck with a covered terrace under a timber roof, open on the view side
- Build the benches into the structure so cushions stay dry under the roof
- A gas fire box at sitting height, on a timer, sited away from the roof line
- Warm lighting on the beams and the steps, on its own zone
The result
The terrace is used October to March. The fire is on most weekend evenings, and the steps down to the garden are lit for the first time.
We sat out there on New Year's Day with the fire on. I did not think we would ever say that about this house.
