Sample project, Kirkland
The covered fire terrace
A deck nobody used after September.
The terrace is used October to March. The fire is on most weekend evenings, and the steps down to the garden are lit for the first time.
Each started with a problem: water, shade, a slope or a hidden view. Sample projects; the photographs are stand-ins for the studio's own.

Sample project, Medina
Every storm ran across the terrace.
The terrace stays dry through winter storms, the slope is a series of usable beds, and there is a path to the bottom of the garden.

Sample project, Sammamish
A lawn that never grew under the firs.
No more reseeding. The garden is green all year, the creek carries water in winter, and the path stays clean.

Sample project, Mercer Island
A view hidden behind a laurel hedge.
The lake is back in view from the kitchen, there is a terrace for long dinners, and the garden holds its shape through winter.
