Sample project, Sammamish
The woodland edge
A lawn that never grew under the firs.

The problem
The back lawn was moss and bare soil under tall Douglas firs. It was reseeded every spring and failed every summer, and the kids tracked mud into the house.
What we decided
- Take out the lawn and let the shade win: sword fern, deer fern, salal and vine maple
- A dry creek to carry winter runoff through the planting toward the street
- A stepping-stone path on the route the kids already used
- A small gravel clearing with a bench where the light comes through
The result
No more reseeding. The garden is green all year, the creek carries water in winter, and the path stays clean.
They talked us out of the lawn. Two years on, it is the part of the house visitors ask about.
